Buckle Brothers

In the heart of South Central Los Angeles, the untamed spirit of the old west is alive and well, vividly captured by filmmaker Marquette Williams. This documentary reveals an energetic urban subculture that might defy many people’s expectations. While horse riding and rodeos are often associated with rural ranches and vast landscapes, just outside Compton, there’s a different reality where four young cowboys redefine what it means to be a roughrider. Lil Ron, at twenty-three, along with eighteen-year-olds Yah-Ya, Mike, and Jazmine, are determined to break stereotypes as they compete on the rodeo circuit. Lil Ron especially has his sights on the coveted Rookie of the Year award. Watch these trailblazers as they strive to merge inner-city grit with the rugged spirit of the wild west. “Buckle Brothers (2005)” can be streamed online right now.
