Cal

Overview

In the film “Cal” (2013), a young man in his twenties, Cal, returns to his hometown of Bristol from France after learning about his mother’s illness. Upon arriving, he finds the city grappling with severe economic challenges due to a global financial crisis. Poverty and crime are rampant, with nightly riots and looting becoming the norm. The homecoming proves anything but welcoming as his mother remains staunchly homophobic, rejecting Cal, despite him being openly gay. Meanwhile, his Aunt Jane, residing in a dilapidated council house, numbs her dismal life with welfare-funded alcohol and unsettling advances toward her nephew. As Cal maneuvers through this tumultuous environment, he encounters a young student requiring his assistance. This benevolent act, however, entangles him with a criminal drug-dealing pimp and sets off a desperate race against time where he must reconcile with his mother before fleeing town. It’s a vivid portrayal of a family struggling in the depths of poverty, anger, and confusion as they yearn for love and acceptance. Watch “Cal” (2013) for free online, right here, on cineby.
