Perfect Obedience

In “Perfect Obedience” (2014), director Luis Urquiza delves into a narrative inspired by the real-life events surrounding Marcial Maciel, the founder of the Legion of Christ, whose history of child abuse was only addressed in the mid-2000s. The film is narrated from the perspective of 13-year-old Julián, who leaves his loving pastoral home to enter the solemn, revered confines of a seminary. There, he catches the attention of Father Ángel de la Cruz, who takes him under his wing as a close disciple, renaming him “Sacramento Santos.” Father Ángel initiates Julián into the enigmatic doctrine of “perfect obedience,” with its core precept: never question a superior’s authority.
