Russell Brand: Messiah Complex

Filmed live at the Hammersmith Apollo, Russell Brand explores the notion of heroes and leaders, questioning what defines their values. The show revolves around the concept of the ‘Messiah Complex,’ a syndrome where individuals believe they might be the messiah. Brand playfully speculates whether iconic figures like Jesus, Che Guevara, Gandhi, Malcolm X, and Hitler could have harbored such a mindset. These individuals have significantly influenced our perspectives, yet their images are often manipulated to symbolize ideas disconnected from their true selves. Brand humorously imagines whether Gandhi would embrace modern brands like Apple, if Che Guevara would support Madonna, or if Jesus would agree with contemporary Christianity. Ultimately, he dismisses these notions as nonsense, urging the audience to reject voting, disregard advertisements, seek the divine within themselves and others, and perhaps topple a few bins on their journey home. And naturally, there’s a dose of humor involving sex.
