Mr. Pip

In the midst of a violent conflict in the province of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, a young girl’s fascination with the novel Great Expectations, introduced by the sole white man in her village, becomes a focal point of her life. The year is 1991, and war over a lucrative copper mine devastates Bougainville, isolating its communities. The enigmatic “Popeye” (played by Hugh Laurie) provides an oasis of stories for fourteen-year-old Matilda’s small village through the captivating tales of Charles Dickens, offering a much-needed respite from their harsh reality.
