Laughing Under the Clouds

During the early Meiji era, a notorious prison called Gokumonjou has been constructed in the center of a vast lake to address the rising crime rates of the new age. The Kumou brothers, famed for their skills, act as the ferrymen: Tenka, the eccentric leader; Soramaru, the daring yet honorable second brother; and Chuutarou, the innocent youngest sibling. Despite their solemn duties, they manage to maintain relatively serene lives in the perpetually overcast town of Oumi alongside their caretaker, Shirasu Kinjou. Unknown to Soramaru and Chuutarou, Oumi holds the ancient tale of “Orochi,” a monstrous serpent set to rise every three centuries within a human host. It is the unspoken mission of the Kumou clan to prevent Orochi’s awakening, as its full resurrection could lead to global devastation. As the day of the beast’s reappearance draws near, the Kumou family must find their strength to continue Laughing Under the Clouds.
