West Side Stories: The Making of a Classic

In anticipation of the 60th anniversary of “West Side Story” in 2017, dancer Bruno Tonioli and broadcaster Suzy Klein delve into the real-life origins of this timeless production. They explore its creation by speaking directly, for the first time on television, to key figures involved during the original Broadway opening in September 1957, such as Sondheim, producer Hal Prince, and original cast members like Chita Rivera, Carol Lawrence, and Rita Moreno. Accompanied by the BBC Symphony Orchestra and specially chosen vocalists, viewers are invited to experience the evocative music again and learn how “West Side Story” boldly spotlighted the 1950s issues of racial tension and teenage gangs, revolutionizing musical theatre.
