Taarka

“Taarka” (2008) is the inaugural film told entirely in the Seto language, chronicling the life of Hilana Taarka, a remarkable folk singer of a small indigenous people. Living as an outcast, she resided in a small, chimney-less dwelling, raising her children in poverty and earning her keep through various odd jobs and her singing. Her songs, often a blend of truth—be it bitter or humorous—crafted a narrative that oscillated between fear, disdain, and admiration. Despite her international acclaim from humble beginnings in a Seto village, Taarka remained an outsider in her community, revered as the ‘Mother of the Song’ but never truly embraced as one of their own. Her legacy is a testament to her resilience and talent. Check out “Taarka” on cineby for a streaming experience.
