Lou Lap

“Lou Lap (2015)” is a riotous dive into anarcho-absurdism, drenched in blood and grand guignol flair, serving as the quintessential youth film from Hong Kong. It tells the story of a rebellious young adult who views himself as a smooth operator, yet ends up working the graveyard shift at a local convenience store. Just when you assume it’s headed towards a romantic comedy with his attractive coworker, chaos erupts in the form of a robbery, gangsters, and an explosive shootout. The twist of a neighbor wielding a homemade bomb reveals a satirical commentary on Hong Kong’s perplexing reality, where the ruthless trample the despondent, and pandemonium seems the only sensible reaction to a future devoid of hope.
