Shadrach

Set in 1935, “Shadrach” follows the story of a 99-year-old former slave named Shadrach, who wishes to be laid to rest on the very land where he was born into slavery. This request presents a challenge, as the property now belongs to the large Dabney family—Vernon, Trixie, and their seven children—and Virginia law prohibits the burial of a Black man on that land. These legal and moral dilemmas create a captivating narrative rich in historical and societal commentary. Watch Shadrach (1998) online.
