Deli Man

Each captivating tale requires a bold and reliable storyteller, and in “Deli Man,” Ziggy Gruber takes on this distinguished role. As a third-generation delicatessen expert, Ziggy’s roots are steeped in the rich traditions of deli culture, with family ties tracing back to Berger’s in the diamond district and the Woodrow Deli on Long Island. Ziggy’s grandfather famously owned the Rialto Delicatessen on Broadway, and Ziggy himself has been immersed in the world of delis since childhood, literally climbing crates to stuff cabbages at age eight. Today, Ziggy is the proud owner and master chef, incorporating Yiddish influences and French culinary techniques, at Kenny and Ziggy’s in Houston, Texas. The saga of the deli extends beyond Ziggy’s narrative. “Deli Man” explores iconic institutions like Carnegie, Katz’s, 2nd Avenue Deli, Nate ‘n Al, and Canter’s, capturing insights from deli aficionados such as Jerry Stiller, Alan Dershowitz, Freddie Klein, Dennis Howard, Jay Parker (Ben’s Best), Fyvush Finkel, and Larry King. “Deli Man (2015)” is available to stream right here on cineby.
