Mary and Martha
Trailer
Overview
Affluent American homemaker Mary Morgan withdraws her bullied son, George, from school to educate him at home, which includes an adventurous trip to Southern Africa. During their time in Mozambique, George tragically succumbs to malaria after being bitten by a mosquito that infiltrated his net. Stricken by grief, Mary returns to Africa, where she crosses paths with Martha O’Connell, an Englishwoman whose son Ben also died of malaria. Ben, a dedicated volunteer teacher, had given away his mosquito net to a student, mistakenly believing that adults were not at risk. The two women are astounded by the sheer number of deaths caused by the disease. While Martha remains in Africa contributing as a volunteer, Mary takes her fight to the American government, advocating for change. Martha unexpectedly arrives at Mary’s home, and with the assistance of Mary’s former diplomat father, they present their case to a senate committee, urging for increased health spending to tackle malaria. Their efforts yield some success, yet the conclusion notes that there is still much more to be done.
