After the Rehearsal

In “After the Rehearsal” (1984), Henrik Vogler, a meticulous and composed theater director, often lingers after rehearsals to reflect and strategize. On one particular day, Anna returns to the theater under the pretense of searching for a missing bracelet. As the lead actress in Vogler’s upcoming production of Stindberg’s “A Dream Play,” Anna confides in him about her resentment towards her late mother, an alcoholic actress who once was both Vogler’s leading star and lover. Engulfed in memories, Vogler recalls a poignant encounter with Anna’s mother, Rakel, who, in her later years, pleaded with him to visit her apartment. Upon waking from his reflections, Anna unveils her true intentions for coming back, prompting an uncharacteristic emotional reaction from Vogler, leading to a complex interplay of emotions between the youthful actress and the seasoned director.
