Dancing on Ice

Overview
Dancing on Ice, a British television series hosted by Phillip Schofield and Christine Bleakley, showcases celebrities paired with professional figure skaters who perform in front of a panel of judges. Created by LWT and Granada Television, this format has become a prime-time attraction in eight countries, including Italy and Chile. Although known as Torvill and Dean’s Dancing on Ice in Australia, it was discontinued there after just one season due to high production expenses. Initially titled Skating with Celebrities, the show’s name was changed after ITV’s unsuccessful 2005 celebrity-focused summer programming. Often compared to the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, ITV gave Dancing on Ice a January launch amid concerns but it quickly became a sensation, ranking as the third most-watched UK television show of 2006 with thirteen million tuning in for the finale. Mentors and iconic Olympic skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean not only train participants but also provide insights and appear throughout the show. Since its inception, Torvill and Dean have typically kicked off each episode with a performance, except for certain episodes in the fourth series when Torvill performed solo due to Dean’s shoulder surgery recovery.
