In Absentia

In an asylum’s upper room, a solitary woman occupies her space, surrounded by the evening’s piercing lights occasionally illuminating her window. She diligently sharpens pencils and jots down thoughts in a notebook, her force often snapping the pencil tips with a snap. Those broken tips find a resting spot on the window sill, a curious ritual. Nearby, a devilish figure looms, crafted from straw or clay, adding an eerie presence to the scene. Her writing complete, she folds her letter, slips it into an envelope, and sends it through a slot, perhaps reaching out to her absent loved one. Sweetheart, come.
