Overview
“Road to Avonlea” is a captivating TV series that aired in both Canada and the U.S. between 1990 and 1996. Created by Kevin Sullivan, this show was produced by Sullivan Films along with CBC and the Disney Channel, with further support from Telefilm Canada. The series draws inspiration from several books by L.M. Montgomery, including “The Story Girl” and “Chronicles of Avonlea,” among others, and some episodes have even been turned into independent books by various authors, leading to approximately 30 titles being published. For U.S. audiences, the title was shortened to “Avonlea,” with certain episodes being retitled and reordered. When released on VHS and DVD in the U.S., the series was known as “Tales from Avonlea.” Set in the small fictional town of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, during the early 1900s, the story follows 10-year-old Sara Stanley, who is sent by her wealthy father from Montreal to live with her two aunts, Hetty and Olivia King, connecting her to her late mother’s family. Initially centered around Sara’s interactions with her family, the show eventually began to focus on the broader King family and other Avonlea residents. Although Sarah Polley, who played Sara, left the series in 1994, she made guest appearances in the 6th and 7th seasons. Watch “Road to Avonlea” online now.
