Expecting a Miracle

In the film “Expecting a Miracle” (2009), Los Angeles engineer Pete Stanhope is at his wit’s end with the costly and exhausting IVF treatments he and his wife, Donna, have been undergoing. Desiring a family yet navigating different paths, Pete considers adoption, despite Donna’s reluctance. To ease their marital tension, the couple embarks on a romantic getaway to Mexico, where unforeseen car trouble leaves them stranded in the quaint village of Dommatina. As Pete seeks assistance from Juan Salazar, the town’s sole mechanic, he also engages with Father Arturo in preparing for the annual celebration. Through their interactions, Pete and Donna encounter Pepillo, Juan’s spirited yet disabled younger brother, who is set to perform a special “flying act” at the fiesta. The experience of finding joy in simplicity within this peaceful community offers new perspectives that may alter the course of their family’s future.
