The Jade Pendant

Escaping an arranged marriage in China, the determined Peony agrees to a contract for work as a “flower girl” in America. There, she encounters Tom, an American-born Chinese cook whose father is involved in building the Transcontinental Railroad. Their journey is plagued by challenges from a Hong Kong Triad leader intent on expanding his influence into America. Their story unfolds as a tale of the first significant wave of Chinese immigration to the United States, woven with themes of romance, cultural tension, passion, culinary traditions, and the quest for enduring love, all set against the backdrop of the largest mass lynching in American history, which took place in Los Angeles’ Chinatown in 1871.
