Bisbee ’17

In 2017, the residents of Bisbee, Arizona, a historic copper-mining town near the Mexican border, gear up to mark the centennial of a grim chapter in their history: the notorious Bisbee Deportation of 1917. During this dark period, 1,200 striking miners were forcibly evicted from their homes and abandoned in the desert to perish. As the community grapples with this violent and often misunderstood past, they bring it to life through dramatic reenactments that highlight varying perspectives. The townspeople, driven by their conflicting viewpoints, “direct” these scenes, infusing them with personal family histories and culminating in the grand restaging of the deportation on its 100th anniversary.
