Cooked: Survival by Zip Code

In Cooked: Survival by Zip Code (2019), filmmaker Judith Helfand embarks on a powerful exploration of the politics surrounding disasters, using the tragic 1995 Chicago heat wave as a case study. This calamity claimed the lives of 739 residents, predominantly from Black communities in the city’s most impoverished areas. Helfand sheds light on systemic issues and questions how disasters are defined and addressed in society.
