Hurley

Set against the thrilling backdrop of 1970s car racing, Hurley Haywood maintained an image of coolness and composure. Known for his stunning achievements as a five-time 24 Hours of Daytona champion, three-time Le Mans victor, and Trans-Am series winner, Haywood fit the Hollywood persona of a charming man raised by a respectable Midwestern family. However, he often remained in the shadow of his racing partner and mentor, the unpredictable Peter Gregg, whose tragic suicide in 1980 sent shockwaves throughout the racing community. Beneath his polished exterior, Haywood carried secrets of his own. Despite numerous liaisons with women, even making public appearances with Penthouse models, he kept his private life under wraps. Through skillfully curated archival footage and insightful interviews, particularly with actor and fellow racer Patrick Dempsey, “Hurley (2019)” dives deep into Haywood’s delicate balancing act between his racing career and hidden personal life, raising the question of whether the motorsport world is ready to embrace openly LGBT racers.
