Final Ascent: The Legend of Hamish MacInnes

From an early age, Hamish MacInnes had carved out a legendary path. He first scaled the Matterhorn at just 16, and by 17, he had built his own motor car from scratch. In 1953, alongside his companion Johnny Cunningham, he almost conquered Everest before Hillary and Tenzing. Renowned globally as an explorer, expedition leader, and engineer, MacInnes invented the all-metal ice axe, wrote the International Mountain Rescue Handbook, and founded the Glencoe Mountain Rescue, saving countless lives. However, even his remarkable achievements couldn’t prevent him from being institutionalized at 84 due to delirium. Following a challenging period in a psychogeriatric ward in the Scottish Highlands and multiple escape attempts, he emerged with his memory erased. “Final Ascent: The Legend of Hamish MacInnes (2019)” captures his journey of rediscovering his past and rescuing himself.
