Once Upon a River

Following the brutal demise of her father, young Native American Margo Crane embarks on a journey along Michigan’s Stark River to find her long-lost mother. During her travels, she meets both friends and foes, confronts various threats, and discovers the natural splendor around her, all while reconciling with her history and her sense of self. A rich, Midwestern Gothic narrative, Once Upon a River is the first film by Chicago’s own musician-turned-filmmaker Haroula Rose, skillfully combining the essence of Winter’s Bone with the adventurous spirit of Huckleberry Finn.
