121: Overcoming Drug Addiction by Faith

At the age of 20, Burton Barr Jr. was restrained by friends who forcibly injected heroin into him, marking the beginning of his 22-year struggle with addiction. During the lowest point of his addiction, Barr’s father approached him, offering neither lectures nor reminders of the pain Barr caused his family. Instead, he simply handed Barr a Bible, pointing him to a specific scripture that he encouraged Barr to read each morning before leaving home. This scripture, Psalms 121, became the catalyst for Barr’s recovery from his addictions to heroin, cocaine, crack, alcohol, cigarettes, and sex by embodying the wisdom of the 121st Psalm.
