Reefa

Israel “Reefa” Hernandez Jr., a gifted young artist from Colombia, is enjoying his final summer in Miami with his family, friends, and new girlfriend, Frankie, before heading to New York City to pursue an art scholarship. As Israel and his friends roam the bustling streets on skateboards, leaving their colorful marks on the walls of Wynwood—Miami’s graffiti epicenter—their shared excitement is overshadowed by a mix of anticipation and apprehension: Israel’s family is anxiously awaiting their Green Cards, and he yearns for his artistic talents to gain recognition. The fateful day of August 6, 2013, sees Israel in a tragic and heart-wrenching encounter with law enforcement, as his attempt to spray paint one final wall, a masterpiece meant to earn peer respect, ends in a devastating incident that shocks not only his family and friends but ignites a wave of outrage across Miami and the nation over another instance of police brutality.
