Personal Services

This film narrates the intriguing journey of a woman transforming her suburban home into an unconventional business. Inspired by the true-life experiences of Cynthia Payne, the plot centers on Christine Painter, portrayed by Julie Walters. She starts as a struggling waitress but, with the assistance of prostitute Shirley and the cross-dressing Wing Commander Morten, she ventures into the world of managing a brothel for older gentlemen. The quirky enterprise involves entertaining esteemed clients, such as judges and Generals, in unconventional ways. Christine sees her work as fulfilling an essential service for these seemingly benign individuals. When the house is inevitably raided and the case reaches court, it becomes apparent that the judge presiding over the matter is not entirely unfamiliar with Christine’s establishment.
