Passion

“The Passion is a unique dark comedy that unfolds the journey of Frances-ko, a young woman who grew up in a convent, named after Saint Francesco. Struggling with her lack of experience in love and intimacy, she seeks guidance from above but is instead answered by an unsettling voice from below—specifically from a human-faced growth located between her legs. This growth, called Mr. Koga by Frances-ko, constantly demeans her with remarks like ‘Woman, you are worthless,’ yet Frances-ko learns to live with the sarcastic commentary, developing a complex, adversarial relationship with it. The film, adapted from Kaoruko Himeno’s renowned 1997 novel, is expertly brought to life under the direction of Ryoko Yoshida. It is beautifully shot by seasoned cinematographer Akiko Ashizawa and energized by Mayuko Iwasa’s captivating performance, with Kanji Furutachi providing the voice for the condescending Koga. The eclectic soundtrack composed by the famed experimental musician Otomo Yoshihide adds to the film’s distinctive charm. Watch Passion (2013) online.
