The Given Word

Zé, a destitute man, treasures his donkey above all else. When the animal becomes gravely ill, Zé vows to Saint Bárbara that if the donkey recovers, he will journey to the state capital, carrying a cross like Jesus, as a gesture of gratitude. Miraculously, the donkey recuperates, prompting Zé to embark on his pilgrimage. However, upon reaching the church, the priest is unwilling to receive the cross after learning the circumstances behind Zé’s vow. The Given Word (1962) is now available for streaming.
