The King Kong That Appeared in Edo

“The King Kong That Appeared in Edo” is a fascinating lost film, recognized as one of Japan’s pioneering Tokusatsu productions. The imaginative visual effects were crafted by Fuminori Ohashi, although his involvement as a modeling consultant for the iconic 1954 Godzilla remains a topic of debate among experts like Eizo Kaimai and Shinji Hiruma. Notably, the “Kong” in this narrative was not depicted as the colossal creature one might expect, as revealed in a synopsis published in Kinema Junpo in March 1938. Watch it here.
