Rosewater

In 2009, Iranian Canadian journalist Maziar Bahari was sent to report on Iran’s tumultuous elections for Newsweek. As one of the few correspondents in the country with ties to US media, he participated in a satirical interview on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, conducted by comedian Jason Jones. Although the segment was meant as satire, Tehran’s authorities failed to see the humor and used it as a pretext to arrest Bahari at his home, leading to his imprisonment. Making a strong cinematic debut, Jon Stewart directs the compelling story of Bahari’s extended detention and intense interrogations in this gripping docudrama. Rosewater (2014) highlights Gael García Bernal’s standout performance, showcasing Bahari’s struggle to hold onto hope and sanity through memories of his family, cherished music, and thoughts of his wife and future child.
