In “Standby (2014),” Alan, a young man in his twenties played by Gleeson, finds himself in a tough spot. He’s been left heartbroken at the altar and recently lost his job at a bank, leading to a new gig working alongside his mother as a part-time tourist advisor at Dublin Airport. During a shift at the airport, he unexpectedly runs into Alice, portrayed by Paré, his first love who’s caught waiting for a flight back to New York. Their romance, which blossomed one summer eight years ago, ended with Alan promising to visit her in the US someday—a promise he never fulfilled, leaving them without contact all these years. Alan sees this encounter as a chance to rekindle their connection, persuading a hesitant Alice to extend her stay in Dublin for just one more night. As they spend an unforgettable evening together, Alan and Alice start to realize their strong compatibility, even more so than in their past affair. Yet, they are racing against the clock as their renewed interaction could be fleeting. What turns an unexpected second chance into the lasting opportunity one has always hoped for?
