The Merry Wives of Windsor

In “The Merry Wives of Windsor,” the portly Sir John Falstaff deludes himself into believing that both Mistress Ford and Mistress Page are enamored by him. Driven by both their allure and their husbands’ wealth, he sets out to court them simultaneously. However, the clever women are aware of his schemes and cleverly turn the tables, subjecting Falstaff to a string of embarrassing encounters, nighttime frights, and a notably soggy and odorous laundry basket. Boldly vibrant and bustling with colorful characters, this play is a masterfully crafted farce and the only comedy Shakespeare chose to set in his homeland. This work also stands as a predecessor to English middle-class comedy, paving the way to the contemporary TV sitcom.
