The Bishop’s Wife

In “The Bishop’s Wife” (1947), an Episcopal Bishop named Henry Brougham becomes consumed with the ambitious project of constructing a grand cathedral, which he hopes will be funded by a wealthy and unyielding widow. As he gets caught up in his work, he drifts away from his family and the original calling that led him to become a clergyman. To guide him back, an angel named Dudley arrives, offering assistance to everyone, although not always in the ways they might expect or desire. While Dudley’s charm endears him to everyone else, Henry grows suspicious, fearing that the angel aims to supplant him in both his professional and personal life as Christmas looms.
