The Illusion

In 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi set out from Quarto alongside a brigade of young idealists who traveled from across Italy. His devoted officers accompanied him, notably Colonel Vincenzo Giordano Orsini from Palermo. The ranks also included two Sicilian recruits: Domenico Tricò, a farmer who had moved north, and Rosario Spitale, a skilled illusionist. Upon landing in Marsala, Sicily, Garibaldi’s forces confronted the Bourbon army, vastly outnumbering them. Initially, the odds made it seem nearly impossible for Garibaldi to break through the defenses and reach Palermo. However, just as defeat seemed imminent, Garibaldi formulated a brilliant strategy.
