The Metropolitan Opera: Akhnaten

Philip Glass’ opera “Akhnaten,” first performed in Stuttgart back in 1984, is the third installment in a trilogy of operas showcasing influential historical figures. This final chapter focuses on the ancient Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten, who made attempts to initiate a monotheistic worship centered around the deity Aton during his rule in the 14th century BC but was ultimately unsuccessful because of the clergy’s opposition. The 2019/20 production at New York’s Metropolitan Opera was a noteworthy triumph, largely credited to the exceptional performances of the cast, headed by countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, and Phelim McDermott’s innovative direction that mesmerizes audiences with stunning visual elements.
