The Arbor

The Arbor (2010) paints a compelling picture of the late playwright Andrea Dunbar, capturing her courageous portrayal of life on Bradford’s troubled Buttershaw Estate. Andrea, hailed as a “genius straight from the slums,” unflinchingly documented her challenging upbringing. Following her untimely death at 29, The Arbor revisits the estate, weaving together the poignant tales of both Andrea and her daughter Lorraine, who is also 29 and grappling with her own struggles. Lorraine, alienated from her mother’s family and serving a prison sentence with rehabilitation attempts, delves into her mother’s plays and letters, embarking on a journey of personal reflection and understanding.
