A Fool

In his first venture as a director, the actor Chen Jianbin draws inspiration from films like A Touch of Sin, No Man’s Land, and Black Coal, Thin Ice, creating a gripping mainland noir. This story intricately weaves themes of kindness versus cruelty, madness versus logic, and greed versus humanity, where assumptions about who the fool is might be challenged. Chen delivers a remarkable portrayal of Latioazi, a humble goat farmer whose son is incarcerated. When Latioazi encounters a young man with a mental handicap who unexpectedly starts living with him, it sets off an explosive sequence of events that starkly exposes China’s class disparities. Latioazi’s hesitant act of generosity inadvertently opens the door to a stream of strangers and swindlers eager to take whatever little he possesses.
