Almost Holy

In the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s dissolution, Ukraine experienced significant transformations within its social and political spheres, leading to increased government corruption and deteriorating infrastructure. This turmoil left many young people homeless, turning to a deadly mix of injected cold medicine and alcohol. In response to this crisis in the early 2000s, Gennadiy Mokhnenko, a pastor from Mariupol, began tackling child homelessness by forcibly taking street children to his Pilgrim Republic rehabilitation center. This center is recognized as the largest of its kind in the former Soviet Union. Gennadiy’s relentless efforts and his tough love strategy have divided opinions, rendering him a folk hero to some and a vigilante to others. Regardless of the criticism, he remains steadfast in his mission. Almost Holy (2015) showcases this gripping real-life saga.
