Angela’s Ashes

Adapted from Frank McCourt’s best-selling autobiography, Angela’s Ashes depicts the struggles of young Frankie and his family as they attempt to break free from the crushing poverty of the pre-war Limerick slums. The film begins with the family residing in Brooklyn, yet after the tragic death of one of Frankie’s siblings, they return to Ireland, only to discover that their circumstances have deteriorated even further. Frankie’s father faces prejudice in the Southern Republic due to his Northern Irish background, complicating his search for work, even after his involvement with the IRA, and when finances do come his way, they are squandered on alcohol.
