Bends

Flora Lau’s first feature film is a beautifully crafted piece that delicately examines the lives of two individuals with contrasting future prospects: a prosperous woman from Hong Kong and her chauffeur from mainland China, both grappling with unexpected challenges in life. Anna, portrayed by Carina Lau, attempts to uphold her image among her socialite friends after her husband’s sudden disappearance. Meanwhile, Fai, played by Chen Kun, is dealing with the reality that his heavily pregnant wife lacks health care access in Hong Kong and faces potential penalties if they return to mainland China due to the one-child policy. The film artfully critiques the societal contradictions by paralleling their challenges rather than creating conflict between them.
