Bread and Roses

Maya, a sharp-witted young woman, crosses the Mexican border without proper documentation and arrives at the Los Angeles residence of her older sister, Rosa. Maya secures employment as a janitor through her sister, but her job is with a non-union cleaning service where the ill-tempered supervisor can terminate employees on a whim. Meanwhile, the service-workers’ union has tasked organizer Sam Shapiro with leading the “justice for janitors” campaign at the building. Maya becomes an eager participant in the movement and finds herself attracted to Sam. However, Rosa hesitates to join due to her husband’s poor health. As the workers seek public support, management employs intimidation tactics to create division and maintain control. Ultimately, the clash between the workers and management seems imminent.
