City of Joy

The Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered through two decades of relentless violence, where sexual assault has been weaponized to shatter communities and extract valuable minerals. This region is often labeled as one of the harshest places on earth for women. However, “City of Joy” presents an alternative narrative, highlighting the resilience within this beleaguered area. The documentary follows Jane, a student at a center that transforms women who have endured unspeakable abuse into empowered leaders. We also encounter the inspiring founders: a dedicated Congolese doctor, a passionate activist, and an innovative New York playwright. The film skillfully navigates the balance between moments of happiness and sorrow as these figures unite in their quest for hope in a frequently bleak environment. Watch the City of Joy (2016) drama.
