Da Shang Hai

Set against the backdrop of early 1900s Shanghai’s gangster age, “The Last Tycoon” revolves around CHENG (played by Chow Yun-Fat), who is framed by the police chief (Sammo Hung), forcing him to abandon his familiar life and his beloved QIU (Monica Mok) to start anew. After escaping prison, CHENG rapidly and forcefully climbs the ranks of Shanghai’s criminal world, ultimately becoming one of its most infamous mob leaders. However, the weight of fame and infamy becomes burdensome as CHENG finds himself caught between the advancing Japanese forces and the treacherous local secret service. This tension heightens when he crosses paths once more with QIU and her writer husband, prompting questions about whether love can blossom in such tumultuous times.
