Dark Horse

DARK HORSE is an extraordinary true story about a barmaid from a South Wales mining village who managed to breed a racehorse on her small plot of land, propelling it to championship status. Although Jan had experience with breeding dogs and birds, horses were an uncharted territory for her; she had never even ridden one. Undeterred, she persuaded a few locals to invest ten pounds a week in her venture, purchased a thoroughbred mare with an unremarkable racing history for £300, and paired it with an aging stallion, both seemingly past their prime. Defying expectations, this unlikely endeavor resulted in a racing winner. The narrative captures a bold adventure of fortune, opportunity, and overcoming obstacles, illustrating how a group of working-class individuals from the Welsh Valleys challenged the racing elites and triumphed over social and economic barriers, restoring hope and pride to their downtrodden community.
