Istanbul United

The devoted fans of Istanbul’s top football teams—Galatasaray, Fenerbahce, and Besiktas—are renowned throughout Europe for their passionate team loyalty and intense rivalries, which often turned violent. Amid Turkey’s protest movement, initially aiming to save Gezi Park from demolition, a broader opposition to the ruling AK party emerged due to the harsh police response against peaceful demonstrators. In a surprising twist, rival football fans put aside their differences to unite for a shared cause. Standing arm in arm, these football ultras confront the police, leveraging their knowledge of street battles to shield protesters from tear gas and erect barricades. For the first time, under the banner of “Istanbul United,” they join forces. Istanbul United (2014) is available for streaming.
