Karbala

On the 3rd of April, 2004, amid the sacred Ashura holiday, Iraqi insurgents aligned with Shiite leader Muktada As-Sadr initiated an uprising in the Polish-controlled area. This formidable task of protecting City Hall fell to the Polish forces, assisted by Bulgarian troops and Iraqi police, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak. The ensuing battle became the largest military engagement for the Polish since World War II. Amazingly, the allied forces suffered no fatalities while approximately 80 insurgents were killed in their counter-assault.
