Machuca

In the bustling heart of Chile’s capital, Santiago, during the turbulent era of President Salvador Allende’s Marxist administration, a bold experiment unfolds at the esteemed Catholic prep school, St. Patrick. With the backing of Father McEnroe, who aligns himself with progressive ideals, a program is initiated that provides free tuition to children from underprivileged backgrounds. One such beneficiary is Pedro Machuca, a young boy from the slums and the son of a housekeeper for Gonzalo Infante’s affluent and open-minded family. Despite the stark differences in their backgrounds, Gonzalo and Pedro form a deep friendship, uniting in protest, while Gonzalo becomes a part of Pedro’s world in the slums. Unfortunately, the political upheaval triggered by General Pinochet’s coup disrupts their bond, affecting supporters like McEnroe along the way.
