Set in the year 1970, “Málmhaus” unfolds during a time when Black Sabbath is recording their first album and ushering in the era of Heavy Metal, coinciding with the birth of Hera Karlsdottir on the floor of her family’s rural Icelandic cowshed. Hera’s idyllic childhood comes to an abrupt end when her older brother dies in a tragic accident, a loss for which she feels responsible. In the depths of her grief, she turns to the intense allure of Heavy Metal music, aspiring to become a rock star. With the quiet farm enveloped in snow and overshadowed by a foreboding mountain, Hera spends years honing her guitar skills and nurturing her dream of forming a band. Now in her early twenties, Hera rebels against societal norms, often landing herself in trouble while yearning to break free from her rural confines but somehow never manages to leave home for good. A former childhood friend returns with hopes of marrying her, and a new young priest arrives in the community, setting off a chain of events that compel Hera to mature, find her voice, and accept that she cannot run forever.
