Meantime

Set against the backdrop of recession-era London during Margaret Thatcher’s time in office, “Meantime (1983)” follows the struggles of a working-class family in the East End. Mavis, the family’s matriarch, shoulders the burden of employment, while her husband Frank and their two sons, Colin—a shy, reserved soul—and Mark, a bold, assertive character, rely on government assistance. This family dynamic juxtaposes with that of Mavis’s sister Barbara and her husband John, whose seemingly affluent and socially elevated lives mask the unhappiness of an unfulfilling marriage.
