Jared Marshall, a ten-year-old boy, faces upheaval in his life following his parents’ divorce a year ago. His father prioritizes work over family, and his mother relocates them from Iowa to her mother’s home in California to start a new job. During a school project where students write letters to U.S. troops in Bosnia, Jared connects with Sergeant First Class Vince Carerra. Vince, who grew up without a father and experienced infidelity in his marriage while on duty, offers Jared supportive and fatherly advice through their correspondence. Upon returning to Fort Sebastian, Vince visits Jared’s home and is warmly received. He soon becomes Jared’s personal baseball coach and, with a little help from Cupid, begins a relationship with Jared’s mother.
